Ghostwriting 101: Billy Bathgate

I first heard Bathgate on a Clue tape. Bathgate was nice (think Jay-Z and a bit of Big L). I immediately thought it was Jigga until I read the tape and saw a kid named Billy Bathgate on the back.

Bathgate had a buzz back in the 90’s after showing his stuff on numerous mixtapes. A bidding war later developed between several labels, which led to the Harlemite signing to Virgin Records.  Unfortuantley for Bathgate, he could never shake off the tag of being a Jay-Z soundalike, which hampered his career.

His underground smash Fuck That was placed on various soundtracks, however Virgin managed to completely fuck up his project , by wiping their urban department off the face of the Earth.(The album featured production from a certain Just Blaze and Kanye West before they even produced for Roc-a-Fella or Jay-Z.)

Bathgate later concentrated on ghostwriting and has penned massive hits for Petey Pablo Trina, Diddy and Amil to name a few.
