Industry Rule No 4080 : Features

There are many rappers who will feature with anyone for the right price. So I can understand if an artist wants to get his name out by featuring with a more established artist. Makes sense right?

The problem with this, is that if you want a feature from a “major” rapper  you will have to pay:

  • the artist for a verse (can be as little as a few thousand dollars to around $50000)
  • the label to issue permission to use their artist (this is often costly and time consuming)

Overall, you could end up paying $50k-$80k for permission, OR the label could just deny permission to clear their artist.

So legally, you would not be able to release the record, that you, Mr Unsigned Rapper has stacked hard to do, if the label refuses permission. You might just be left with a 16 that ends up on anonymous internet mixtapes.

Also, don’t resell any f***ing verses you bum ass rappers.

It’s your job to write new lyrics. It’s bad for business if you kicking the same old verse on radio, mixtape, DVD, album and so on.
