Cold Crush: Business As Usual

“Industry shady, you need to be taken over//I’m overcharging niggas for what they did to The Cold Crush”

Don’t worry, this isn’t an excerpt from Jay-Z: Decoded.

The Cold Crush Brothers were a rap group from the Bronx, who were one of the biggest hip groups of their era. Their popularity exceeded domestic markets, enabling them to tour and sell tapes in Japan & France, which was a first for hip hop at the time.

The Jay-Z quote references how in 1979, one of the Cold Crush Brothers (Grand Master Caz) gave a member of the Sugar Hill Gang his rhyme book, after being asked to help write lyrics for the group.

The lyrics were later used by The Sugar Hill Gang in Rappers Delight . The record would be the first hip hop record to chart in the Top 40.

Grandmaster Caz was never paid and received no royalties, for contributing to what is possibly the most recognizable hip hop record of all time.
